Can bones be Art?

Have you ever thought of bones being used for Art. Well maybe think twice when you see these pictures. These pictures are from a small Christian Church in the Czech Republic. I was just in aw of what they did with these human remains.

So what do you think? Art? Yes or No?

Well it's a cross between art and creepy for me. Just thinking that all those bones are dead people, real people just makes me feel that somehow this isn't right to do.

I don't know, I'm caught in the middle.

Hey Joanne, I agree with you. It is kinda creepy. But I caught myself not being able to stop looking at all the different pictures. If you step back and try not to think about them being human bones then I can kinda see the artist eye this man had back in the 1800's. But if someone did that now is the United States, they would be in jail I am sure.

It does make you think though!

Awesome!!! There is a painting in The Philadelphi Museum of Art of saints. An in the corners of the very ornate frame are the tiny bones of a saint/saints enclosed in glass. I always thought it was the coolest thing and am sure to visit that piece whenever I'm there.
I would gladly donate my bones to make something beautiful...what else are they going to do?

I'm going with creepy too. It's like that German artist who has the exhibit with the skinned corpses. Interesting, but creepy. Hey, I just checked out your Etsy stuff and I LOVE that tassel!!!

I find it very artistic and very cool. Each one was clearly painstakingly cleaned and placed in an interesting way. I suppose it could be a bit creepy to be there and surrounded by all those remains of people and wondering who were they? But I would love for my bones to be used in such a manner..I love anything repurposed! Definitely outside the box~

I suppose there's a creepy element, but it's definitely art. I've been to the catacombs beneath Paris (twice actually) and the bones there are sculpted into different patterns and designs. It doesn't seem creepy as much as a way of showing respect for the dead and giving them a sort of grace under the circumstances.
And then there's Gaudi's designs, which don't use real bones, but are reminiscent of them. Oh, and what about Dia de Los Muertos folk art skeletons?
